Greetings all. I have what I think is a vacum leak on my 2011 Thunderbird. Throttle up & there's a load of squealing from under the tank. Close throttle & immediate silence. I had a look under there & replaced the vac lines that go from the throttle bodies to a couple of what triumph calls "air pressure sensors" under the tank. No improvement. Having another look, I can't see anything else obviously vacum related in that area. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

Is it happening at rest or under way? Does it run any differently?

Under way only, but I must say I have not given it a hand full of throttle sitting in neutral either. I feel the bike is slightly down on power since the noise appeared, although if it's real & not skewed perception the difference is negligible. No rough running, just the quite audible high pitched sound when the throttle is opened. The higher the revs, the softer the noise. Close the throttle & it's instantly gone.

This may sound completely unrelated but are you sure it's not a belt noise (if it makes the noise stationary then that will exclude this)? If so, and you've checked/replaced the map sensor hoses then the only thing related to a squeal that can be easily checked is inlet system or exhaust system, the exhaust headers often need retorqueing , I've not heard of the inlet ducting clamps becoming loose or breaking but they are worth checking. If you have the software it may be worth checking throttle balance. Take the seat off and look around the air intake system as well.

Did you happen to notice that in open areas you hear it less as much as you do around houses concrete dividers, curbs? Because I think Lee has the elusive answer especially if you don't hear it at idle. If you can hear it at idle then I am wrong. I had similar experiences when driving on hyways because the sound is bouncing back to your ear off the hard structures around
Don't leave us hanging, is the problem solved?

Well, no. I took it to the tech I use, & the problem as it turns out is the drive belt. It's not chirping, it's a sustained howl under power. Close throttle & the noise disappears. The belt appears to change its position on the rear pulley under power. Let off the throttle & it moves back to where it started. All rear end bearings checked out ok. This guy has changed tires for me 3x's & got the belt adjusted correctly, so I have a struggle thinking it's an alignment issue. What else could it be?

Mine does that under acceleration in the low gears, always has, but I only hear it when not wearing ear plugs and it's not that loud. Try thoroughly cleaning the belt and pullies, don't have too much tension on the belt, 20-25mm upward pressure (10lbs) ,cold , on side stand. If it still does it try some belt friendly lube.

Take off all your belt guards or have someone wheel it back and forth spraying a particular part of the belt. I am a bit lazy these days.

you dont need to take off anything just spray the exposed part of the belt and dont use much spray
when you take it for a ride it will work its way around the pulleys and whole belt

Carnuba wax works good too. Just rub it on the belt and no more squeaking.

Wouldn't wax attract dirt?

Well, the problem has been identified & corrected. The needle bearing in the pulley hub was in a bad way. Give it the beans & the small play in the bearing got substantial where the belt & pulley met. The result being the belt hard over against the outer ring on the pulley. The poor thing voiced it's displeasure with some major wining. Luckily I had a complete pulley hub assembly laying around. The rubber blocks in the cush drive were kinda sad as well, so I dug the spare set out & put those in. Rode it today & it was blissfully silent. I want to thank all the guys on the Forum for their help on this.

Great call, Lee!
Don't know how you went from vacuum leak to belt noise, but sounds like you nailed it.

Well I was trying to cover a broad spectrum based on the OP's original description . Diagnosing noises from engines and drivelines is one of the things I miss most from my working days and passing that down to the young fellas.

Funny how the belt chirp fools alot of new riders. Some of my belt adjustments were howling when cold, sounded like the devil. Never thought early on that it's the belt.

I readjusted a members belt a while back, got it dead on after he took a short test ride he got off he was all smiles. However on the way home he heard what he thought was the belt again so he pulled over and inspected the bike, the belt was where it should be but he noticed an accessory up front and removed it. It turned out to be wind noise .
